Les Misérables, or in English, "The Miserable Ones" is a novel written by Victor Hugo in 1862. This book is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century and has been adapted into numerous films, plays, and musicals. After reading this book, I was deeply moved by the characters and the story, and I would like to share my thoughts on this masterpiece.

The Plot

The story takes place in France in the early 19th century, during a time of great political and social upheaval. The main character, Jean Valjean, is a former convict who has been released after serving 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. He is unable to find work or a place to stay, and is forced to resort to stealing to survive.

One day, he is taken in by a kind bishop who shows him compassion and forgiveness. This act of kindness changes Valjean's life, and he vows to become a better person. He breaks his parole and starts a new life under a new identity, becoming a successful businessman and mayor of a small town.

However, his past catches up with him when he is recognized by a police inspector, Javert, who has been pursuing him for years. Valjean is forced to flee and is pursued by Javert throughout the book.

The story also follows the lives of other characters, such as Fantine, a single mother who is forced into prostitution to provide for her daughter, Cosette, who is taken in by Valjean after her mother's death. There is also Marius, a young revolutionary who falls in love with Cosette, and the Thénardiers, a corrupt couple who exploit and abuse others for their own gain.

The Themes

The book explores many themes, such as the nature of justice, the power of redemption, and the struggle for social justice. One of the main themes is the struggle of the poor and oppressed against the rich and powerful. The book highlights the injustices of the time, such as the harsh treatment of convicts and the exploitation of the working class.

Another theme is the power of love and compassion. The kindness shown by the bishop towards Valjean sets off a chain of events that ultimately leads to Valjean's redemption. The love between Cosette and Marius also plays a significant role in the story.

The Writing Style

Victor Hugo's writing style is both poetic and descriptive. He paints vivid pictures of the characters and their surroundings, and his use of language is beautiful and lyrical. He also includes historical and social commentary throughout the book, which adds depth and context to the story.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Les Misérables is a powerful and moving novel that explores themes of justice, redemption, and love. The characters are complex and well-developed, and the writing is beautiful and descriptive. Reading this book has given me a greater appreciation for the struggles of the poor and oppressed, and a deeper understanding of the power of kindness and compassion. Les Misérables is truly a masterpiece that deserves its place as one of the greatest novels of all time.
